Ong Ka Ting to contest in Kulai

MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting is tipped to contest in the Kulai parliamentary seat in place of incumbent Datuk Lim Si Cheng, who has dropped out.

Lim, who was also the Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker, said Ong had indicated to him that he (Ong) would be contesting in Kulai.
When contacted by The Edge Financial Daily, Lim said he was not disappointed by the turn of events. “No. I place party interests above all.”

The three-time MP and two-time state assemblyman said he was making way for young leaders. “Since I am not a candidate this time, I can spend time campaigning not just in Kulai but elsewhere,” he added.

According to sources, Ong’s former political secretary and Pekan Nanas state assemblyman Wee Jack Seng is expected to contest in Tanjong Piai, Ong’s current constituency.

A good mix from MCA

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 55% of MCA candidates contesting for parliamentary seats are new faces, said party president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting.

Of the 40 candidates, Ong said 12 were making their debut while 10 were incumbent state assemblymen contesting parliamentary seats for the first time.

All 22 of them made up 55% of the line-up while 16 incumbents were retained, he said.

Two veterans are former Bukit Bintang MP Dr Lee Chong Meng contesting in Bukit Bintang and former state executive councillor Datuk Ong Ka Chuan contesting in Tanjong Malim.

“This is part of the rejuvenating process of the party to have a combination of old and new faces to contest.

“It is a very good mix team from MCA,” said Ong when introducing the candidates at Wisma MCA yesterday.

Ong moved from Tanjung Piai to Kulai parliamentary seat.

On Lee Li Yew replacing Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy to contest in Selayang, Ong said Lee was a good candidate as he has a Master’s Degree and had served in MCA’s Youth wing and crisis relief squad.

“Chan is also happy with the choice of candidate in Selayang,” said Ong.

Lee, 44, is the Youth chief of the Selayang MCA division, vice chairman of the Selayang division and also head of CRSM in Selangor.

On a question about the Labis candidate Chua Tee Yong, Ong said the division recommended Tee Yong. He is the son of former MCA vice president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.

Ong also said that MCA candidates were all ready to stand in the election with high spirits.

Asked whether Chan’s withdrawal would affect the spirit of the team, Ong said: “No, we are a united team and all are ready to move forward.”
