Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) is leading The Malaysian Cohort Project (TMC), a national effort involving the collecting of biological specimens and information from 100,000 Malaysians aged 40 to 65. This is a joint project with the Ministry of Science Technology and Innovations. TMC is part of an international collaborative project involving seven Asia-Pacific countries namely Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, India, China, Singapore, United States and Malaysia.

Prof. Dr. A Rahman A. Jamal, the Director of UKM’s Medical Molecular Biology Institute (UMBI), is the Head of Project at the national level and represents Malaysia as a member of the Asian Cohort Consortium main committee. Chief of Operation for the project is Assoc. Prof. Dr. Syed Zulkifli Syed Zakaria. This project is coordinated through the Malaysia Genome Institute with its secretariat at UMBI.

The primary purpose of this project is to study the relationship between human genetics and environmental exposures including lifestyles with the occurrences of diseases such as cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure. TMC is on-going for a prospective of 10 years. Participants who join the project are interviewed to obtain information such as social demographics, medical backgrounds, physical activities, environmental exposures and work surroundings, alcohol and tobacco consumptions as well as personal habits and food intakes.

Participants also undergo biophysical check-ups including measurement of height, weight, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, electrocardiogram (ECG), spirometry, body composition analysis and also the collecting of biological specimens such as blood and urine samples. The derived data is deposited into a database while biological specimens are kept in a bio-bank. All information is ensured confidential and cannot be accessed by other parties.

The project investigates the relationship between human genetics and environmental exposures to understand the cause of diseases. From the derived data and applications of up-to-date technology, the risk factors of diseases may be identified. This can lead to early disease detection, especially in early stage cancer, as well as the development of preventive measures. The generation of the database and bio-bank has high value for use in future research.

This project started with the questionnaire construction that involved 67 experts from 10 Malaysian institutions. The main objective is to ensure collection of high-quality bio-specimens. A multi-layered informed consent is used to ensure the recruitment of participants and the collecting of bio-specimens are carried out according to standard procedures. The development of the Cohort Management Information System is also very challenging. The developed system has four layers of security measures to protect the collected personal data.

Individuals who are interested to participate in The Malaysian Cohort study or would like to get further information on this project may contact its secretariat at toll-free line 1800-88-2007, or fixed line 03-91710415.
