STANDARD CHARTERED KL MARATHON 2009 SETS RECORD WITH 12,500 RUNNERS!

MARATHON REGISTRATION CLOSES 2 WEEKS EARLY
Kuala Lumpur, 2 June 2009 – In just ten weeks, all 12,500 running slots for the Standard Chartered KL Marathon have been filled up. Registration is now closed, two weeks ahead of the stipulated deadline of 15 June 2009.

This places Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2009 as the largest marathon in Malaysia - not only in terms of participation numbers but also in terms of prize money. A total of RM 350,000 is up for grabs for the fastest runners, with a guaranteed prize pool for Malaysian runners. The marathon will flag off at Dataran Merdeka on 28 June.

“The response to the Standard Chartered KL Marathon has been nothing short of phenomenal. Not only has it garnered more participation than any other marathon in Malaysia, 92% of the participations are Malaysians, which is a step in the right direction of our goal in establishing a running culture in Malaysia,” said Hemant Dua, Director of Octagon SEA & India, also the Marathon Race Director.

Title Sponsor Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia expressed delight over the results. “This is the inaugural Standard Chartered KL Marathon and we are very happy that the community has responded so positively,” said Julian Wynter, Managing Director and CEO of Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia Berhad. “With the strong support from the various ministries, sanctioning bodies and partners, we are confident that the Marathon will become a signature community event for Malaysia and a premier sporting event in the region.”

The organising committee of the Standard Chartered KL Marathon would like to extend its warmest gratitude to runners who have signed up for the race and promises to deliver the best Standard Chartered KL Marathon yet.

For runners who have yet to sign up, Dua added that there is still an opportunity to be part of the marathon as a volunteer. “We would love to have you there on Race Day as a volunteer. Volunteers are the backbone of any sporting event and will help us ensure that runners from around the world have a great time in the city of Kuala Lumpur and are treated to the best of Malaysian hospitality.”

A team of some 500-plus volunteers is required to assist before and during Race Day. Key areas include Race Pack distribution, Fruit and Drinks distribution, Course Marshalls, Crowd Control at Finish Line, Media Tent, and Luggage Tent. More volunteer information is available on the marathon’s official website.

The Race Day carnival festivities are also extended to family and friends of runners, KL-ites and tourists. They are invited to support of the runners and enjoy the Race Day activities at Dataran Merdeka, the site of the event’s Start and Finish Line. Among the events lined up for the day are musical performances, cultural dances and cheerleading performances, as well as fun activities for the kids like face painting, clowns and bouncing castles. Spectators can also share in the runners’ excitement and jubilation as they cross the Finish Line!
