What is enzyme?

A human body is like a light bulb, and the enzyme is the electric current.

Once a good doctor in the US, who spoke highly of natural therapy, said that a human body is like a light bulb, and the enzyme is the electric current. A light bulb lights up only when there is an electric current. Without current, we are merely a light bulb that doesn’t light up. The basic structure of enzyme starts with amino acids, and the blueprint of enzyme production is DNA. Our body works because all the enzymes in our body work their magic.

For a long time, enzymes have been considered the “energy” or “power of life”. Every metabolic activity in human body has something to do with enzyme. For example, thinking, heart beat, neural transmission, digestion, tissue construction and repair, and decomposition of toxins, all of these need enzyme to power the process. Enzyme is in fact “biological catalyst” that increases the rate of chemical reactions and converts nutrients in food we eat everyday for the use of our body. It plays a key role in DNA research.

Enzyme has 6 major functions, oxidation and reduction, decomposition and synthesis, metabolism, heat transformation, body purification and basic protection. It is essential for normal functions of a body. Enzyme is a living mechanism. It can’t survive above 48℃. Therefore, the knowledge of how to obtain and use enzyme wisely concerns how well and how long we live.

The amount of enzyme in a human body is constant. That is, if one does not consume food of high enzyme content, the essential enzymes needed for metabolism will become insufficient when one grows old. In such a vicious cycle, the functions of enzyme will deteriorate accordingly, resulting in aging body and shorter life.

What Food Products Contain Enzymes?+
Fruits and Vegetables
In "Food Enzymes: The Missing Link to Radiant Health," the authors Humbart Santillo and Steve Bell mention fruits and vegetables for their high enzyme content. Fruits and vegetables like bananas, cranberries, figs, grapes, kiwifruit, mangoes, papayas, pineapples, avocados and lemons are good choices to include in your diet. The enzymes and fiber these food products provide aid in the digestion and elimination of disease-causing bacteria, fungi and viruses. If the body is not getting these digestive enzymes, you become more susceptible to fatigue, infections and illnesses.

Nuts and Seeds
Eating raw nuts and seeds means you are ingesting live enzymes. Try almonds, cashews, walnuts, pecans, sunflower and pumpkin seeds for digestive and metabolic enzymes. If you prefer nut butters, purchase the raw, unsalted versions found in most health food stores. The digestive and metabolic enzymes found in nuts and seeds clear your arteries, allow your organs to function and keep your blood sugar balanced.

Importance of Enzyme in the Body

Enzymes are complex proteins produced by all living thing. Enzymes are substances that help carry out a number of the body's function like transforming food and chemical elements into other needed substances.Enzymes helps eliminate toxins in the colon, kidneys, liver, lungs and skin.

Like all proteins, enzymes consist of chains of amino acids linked together. The amino acids with in each kind of enzyme have a characteristic arrangement. The bonds between the different amino acids in the chains are weak and may be broken by such condition as high temperature or high levels of acids. When the bonds are broken, the enzymes become non-functional and disease sometimes occurs.

Enzymes can be obtained from fruits and vegetables like ; mangoes, avocados, papaya, asparagus etc. When vegetables are cooked or boiled, the enzymes can be destroyed since they are very sensitive to heat.

Only 10,000 runners for Seremban Half Marathon next year - The Star News

In huge numbers: Runners at the flag off of the Seremban Half Marathon.

THE PRIZES may have been modest but the turnout was so overwhelming that the organisers of the Seremban Half Marathon (SHM) may have to cap the event to only 10,000 participants next year.

A record 11,500 runners including about 200 participating in the disabled categories turned up for the 24th edition of the SHM.

Organising committee chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Ahmad said the record number of participants which increased year after year was proof of the event’s popularity.

“As an incentive to our runners, we have increased the number of prizes this year with medals and prize money for up to the top 50 participants

“Those who complete the run within a specified time also received pewter medals,” he said at the closing ceremony.

Zainal also expressed confidence on the decision to restrict this year’s event to Malaysians only was a welcome move.

“I am sure this decision will be welcomed by all as they know that they are competing on a level-playing field,” he said.

R. Subramaniam, 26, Brittany Lim 31, and M. Ramakrishnan, 58, emerged champions of the Men’s Senior, Women’s Open and Men’s Veteran 21km race, taking home the top prize of RM600 and a medal each.

Subramaniam was first to cross the finish line clocking 1:15.28s just several minutes ahead of second and third place winners Mohd Haffis Mansor and J. Vignaswaran.

Regular runner comes out top in first Putrajaya run

Winning line-up: Winners of the men’s senior veteran category Tan Wah Sing, Tang Chee Choon, Wong Weng Seng, Khor Ngee Leong and Ramakrishnan Manikam posing with (right) Stream Enterprise marketing manager Wei Chong Hwa.

IT WAS first time lucky for Noor Amelia Musa who competed in the New Balance Pacesetters 15km race in Putrajaya recently.

“Even though the race has been around for some time, I had never heard of it until this year,” said Noor Amelia who completed the race 10 minutes ahead of Jessica Tang Mei Lee (1’13:34) to win the women’s open category.

Crossing the line: Susan Khoo finishing her run in 1hr 8 mins to take the top spot in the Women’s Senior Veteran category.
She was also the only woman to tail the leading male runners till the end of the new route.

“After separating myself from the women’s pack, I made sure I stuck close to the first group of men,” she said, adding that she trains on hills, hence the flat 15km route was an easy challenge for her.

The 25-year-old — a regular on the local running circuit — said she was happy with her finishing time of 1’03.38.

She added that her coach had also reminded her to take the race as part of her training for the upcoming Standard Chartered KL Marathon on June 26

Noor Amelia said she would have to take a break from road races and concentrate on qualifying for a spot in the Sea Games at the end of this year.

In the men’s open category, Kenyans John Kprop Samoei (50:05) and Willy Kipkemoi Rotich (50:06) took the top two spots, respectively, while Morocco’s Ahmad Lamchannak finished third.

Unlike previous years where the race was held in the Lake Gardens in Kuala Lumpur, this time it was brought to Putrajaya where runners were flagged off from Dataran Perbandaran Putrajaya.

There were six categories for the 15km run — men’s open (16 years and above), men’s junior veteran (40 to 49 years), men’s senior veteran (50 years and above), women’s open (16 years and above), women’s junior veteran (35 to 45 years) and women’s senior veteran (46 years and above).

Rice will kill you early

Rice is the Culprit....

The human body was never meant to consume rice! You see, our genes have hardly changed in more than 30,000 years. However, our food choices and lifestyle have changed dramatically. The caveman would hardly recognise our food or way of life. Caveman food was never cooked as fire was not yet tamed. Thus, he ate only those foods that you can eat without treatment with or by fire. He ate fruits, vegetables, fish (sushi anyone?), eggs, nuts and meat. Yes, even meat. You can even eat meat raw if you were starving in the forest. You have the necessary enzymes to digest meat. However, rice, like wheat and corn, cannot be eaten raw. It must be cooked. Even if you were starving in the desert, you cannot eat rice in the raw form. This is because we do not have the system of enzymes to break rice down. You were never meant to eat rice. To make matters worse, you not only eat rice, but also make it the bulk of your food.

In some parts of Asia, rice forms up to 85% of the plate. Even if you take rice, keep it to a minimum. Remember, it is only for your tongue - not your body. Actually, rice and other grains like wheat and corn are actually worse than sugar. There are many reasons:

Rice becomes sugar - lots of it! This is a fact that no nutritionist can deny. Rice is chemically no different from sugar. One bowl of cooked rice is the caloric equal of 10 teaspoons of sugar. This does not matter whether it is white, brown or herbal rice. Brown rice is richer in fibre, some B vitamins and minerals but it is still the caloric equal of 10 teaspoons of sugar. To get the same 10 teaspoons of sugar, you need to consume lots of kangkong-10 bowls of it.

Rice is digested to become sugar. Rice cannot be digested before it is thoroughly cooked. However, when thoroughly cooked, it becomes sugar and spikes circulating blood sugar within half an hour, almost as quickly as it would if you took a sugar candy. Rice is very low in the "rainbow of anti-oxidants."

Rice has no fibre. The fibre of the kangkong fills you up long before your blood sugar spikes. This is because the fibre bulks and fills up your stomach. Since white rice has no fibre, you end up eating lots of 'calorie dense' food before you get filled up.Brown rice has more fibre but still the same amount of sugar.

Rice is tasteless, sugar is sweet. There is only so much that you can eat at one sitting. How many teaspoons of sugar can you eat before you feel like throwing up? Could you imagine eating 10 teaspoons of sugar in one seating? Rice is always the main part of the meal. While sugar may fill your dessert or sweeten your coffee, it will never be the main part of any meal. You could eat maybe two to three teaspoons of sugar at one meal. However, you could easily eat the equal value of two to three bowls (20-30 teaspoons) of sugar in one meal. I am always amused when I see someone eat sometimes five bowls of rice (equals 50 teaspoons of sugar) and then asks for tea tarik kurang manis (less sugar)!

There is no real "built in" mechanism for us to prevent overeating of rice
How much kangkong can you eat? How much fried chicken can you eat? How much steamed fish can you eat? Think about that! In one seating, you cannot take lots of chicken, fish or cucumber, but you can take lots of rice. Eating rice causes you to eat more salt.
As rice is tasteless, you tend to consume more salt - another villain when it comes to high blood pressure. You tend to take more curry that has salt to help flavor rice. We also tend to consume more ketchup and soy sauce which are also rich in salt.
Eating rice causes you to drink less water. The more rice you eat, the less water you will drink as there is no mechanism to prevent the overeating of rice. Rice, wheat and corn come hidden in our daily food. As rice is tasteless, it tends to end up in other foods that substitute rice like rice flour, noodles and bread. We tend to eat the hidden forms which still get digested into sugar.. Rice, even when cooked, is difficult to digest
Can't eat raw rice? Try eating rice half cooked. Contrary to popular belief, rice is very difficult to digest. It is "heavy stuff". If you have problems with digestion, try skipping rice for a few days. You will be amazed at how the problem will just go away.
Rice prevents the absorption of several vitamins and minerals. Rice when taken in bulk will reduce the absorption of vital nutrients like zinc, iron and the B vitamins.
Are you a rice addict? Going rice-less may not be easy but you can go rice-less. Eating less rice could be lot easier than you think. Here are some strategies that you can pursue in your quest to eat less rice: Eat less rice - Cut your rice by half. Barry Sears, author of the Zone Diet, advises "eating rice like spice".
Instead, increase your fruits and vegetables. Take more lean meats and fish. You can even take more eggs and nuts.
Have "riceless" meals. Take no rice or wheat at say, breakfast. Go for eggs instead.
Go on "riceless" days - Go "western" once a week.
Take no rice and breads for one day every week. That can't be too difficult. Appreciate the richness of your food. Go for taste, colors and smells. Make eating a culinary delight. Enjoy your food in the original flavors.
Avoid the salt shaker or ketchup. You will automatically eat less rice.
Eat your fruit dessert before (Yes! No printing error) your meals. The fibre rich fruits will "bulk up" in your stomach.. Thus, you will eat less rice and more fruits.

Energizer Night Run 2011

Despite many runners complaining, I was one of the lucky participants without much to complain about. Here are the reasons why:

  1. The weather conditions were perfect.
  2. The race started promptly without any delay.
  3. We were able to park our car near the main entrance for free, and the security was good. It was only about 400 meters away from the starting point, and there were still plenty of empty lots available.
  4. The organizer provided us with a quality running vest and good information about the route map on their website.
  5. I finished my 11 km (approximately 10.65 km) in 45 minutes and 20 seconds, securing the 2nd position in the Men Veteran category.
  6. I received my goodies bag within 10 minutes after the race, which included a quality headlamp, T-shirt, batteries, charger, mineral water, bananas, Schick shaver, quality finisher medal, certificate, and more.
  7. There was unlimited Gatorade available after the race.
  8. The water stations were adequate for both 11 km and 5.5 km runners.

However, my only complaint is that the organizer did not make any official announcement regarding the winners, and they did not give away the prizes to any of the winners. They promised to send the prizes to the winners later. Unfortunately, my friend Kelvin, who came with me and finished the 21 km race, did not receive a medal or any goodies.

Overall, I still enjoyed the race
